CONTEST 2018 - SNOWKITE ROCCARASO

World Snowkite Contest 2018 – Alto Sangro – Italy

The format of the competition is simple: no fixed route. Each rider has gps system will have to make more km, in the allotted time, more variations in altitude, more perimeter an more distance from the starting point.
All participants will have to leave the starting gate and return at the appointed time in the gate and will be relatively autonomous, there will in fact be a window of 15 minutes to go, and after a time of race have (30 min, 60min, 90min) to go over the gate and stop their gps.

GPS Formula “Fixed time Task”

General Description
The format of the competition is no fixed route. Each rider has to make more distance, more
variations in height, more perimeter and more distance from the starting point in the allowed
time.
All participants will have to leave the starting gate and return at the appointed time in the gate
and will be relatively autonomous, there will be,in fact, a window of 15 minutes after the time of
race (30 min, 60min, 90min) to go over the gate and stop their gps. A Fixed Time task gives an
individual start time to each rider. A riders’s start time is taken when he crosses the start for the
first time, to continue and run the task. A start opening/closing time and last goal time will be set.
TBD: The race management software will be abled to calculate points after the start line and those
immediately before arrival. However, if this solution were to be too complex for the current
edition the riders will have to activate and turn off their GPS in the start area, however, passing
through the starting line.

Parameters
Distance: By distance we mean the total line covered by a rider in the time unit and will be
expressed in meters.

Perimeter: The external perimeter of the track is a parameter to distinguish a rider who realizes
his distance, always back and forth in the same space by a rider who travels his distance always
looking for new spaces.

In the figure 1 (Rider 1) shown, the red line is the distance and
the yellow line is the space of the perimeter. As you can see, the
system excludes all that is internal from what is external.
You can see the different skills of two riders:
The rider 1: has a relatively low perimeter in relation to the
overall distance

Rider 2: performed a good run

Furthest point
This parmeter measures the rider's ability to get away from the starting point to the maximum,
managing to get back in time

Variations in height
The system measures and rewards the rider who makes more changes in height, choosing slopes
and not flat areas.
In case of avalanche risk the organization can change this parameter up to 0 to avoid that the
riders are led to look for steep slopes
Mandatory Equipment:

  • Artva, shovel, probe
  • helmet
  • at least 2 kites (different sizes)
  • GPS receiver GPX format capable with update frequency (TBD) Recommended Equipment
  • VHF Radio, water, food, warm clothes, smartphone

Task phases and procedures
Riders will be given up to 30 minutes every day for every spot visited to familiarize with the
conditions and dangers.
An opening/closing (15 minutes) time of the start windows will be set along with the duration (fixed time) of the task. Individual time will start when they first cross the start gate when the start window is open.
Once the individual time has started the raiders will have the selected time span (30/60/90 min) to
perform the task.
Raiders must get back to the start gate (now called Goal) before the end of the assigned time span , every second late will be penalized. The goal will close after a certain amount of time declared from the organizers each and every day. Raiders crossing the goal line after the closing time will be disqualified for the current task.
The Goal closing time is given by the Start closing time plus the task duration plus a 25% fo the task duration. (i.e. Start Closing time 10:30 , Task duration 1h, Gaol closing time 11:45)

Scoring System and Parameter
The final scoring takes in account different parameters along with their particular coefficients. All
the calculations will be based on the meters travelled:

  • Total distance x1
  • Perimeter x6
  • Total Height gained x 10
  • Distance from the farthest point reached the start point x3

Penalties

  • To define the delays the system will take the seconds in excess and subtract the value of
those points x 5 to the overall score.
  • Passage to prohibited areas cancellation of the run
  • Late departure – 20%
  • If the athlete does not return to the starting point, the run will be canceled

Communications and signals
Flags, acustic signals , radios
6 different signals are needed to communicate with the riders:

  • Freeride Phase
  • 5 minutes to opening start window
  • Start window Open
  • Start windows Closed
  • Goal Closed
  • Runs for the day are over

Ranking and complaints
The ranking system will be the official IKA system. The points of the individual runs will not be
added up. The runs of 30 minutes should be equated with those of 90 minutes.
Complaints:
Right of ways: the precedence system will be IKA’s. However ,when two riders are crossing their
tracks on a slope the descending rider will have right of way since it’s harder to stop
